There are many ways to watch the new movie The Odyssey and let’s talk about the differences between them!
Universal Pictures has provided a tool to explore the differences in aspect ratios for each format.
IMAX 70mm

The ideal way to experience Christopher Nolan’s new film is in a theater that shows the IMAX 70mm format, though only about 30 theaters in the United States have the capability. Those include Los Angeles’ TCL Chinese Theatre and AMC Universal Cinema, NYC’s AMC Lincoln Square 13, and Florida’s AutoNation IMAX.
The film is presented in IMAX’s 1.43:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio in these locations, filling the screen from floor to ceiling.
Here’s a full list of theaters showing The Odyssey in IMAX 70mm.
IMAX Standard

Your next best option for watching The Odyssey will be standard IMAX theaters, which show the movie in the 1.90:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio.
The film’s website notes, “IMAX combines custom theater design with proprietary picture and sound technology to deliver an immersive movie experience. The Odyssey will be presented entirely in IMAX’s 1.90:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio with select IMAX with Laser locations showing it in IMAX’s 1.43:1 Expanded Aspect Ratio. The film will fill your entire field of vision on the floor-to-ceiling screen. The Odyssey is the first feature film ever shot entirely with IMAX Film Cameras.”
70mm Film

Showings of The Odyssey in standard movie theaters with 70mm film will not be presented in an extended aspect ratio, but you will get a bright picture that is up to 3x the resolution of a standard digital film projector.
These showings are presented in 2.20:1 aspect ratio. Less than 25 theaters around the world have the capability of showing 70mm movies.
35mm Film (Classic Film Format)

The Odyssey‘s website notes, “35MM is the classic film format. It has 4 perforations and runs vertically through the projector, shown at a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. It projects light through the entire 35 millimeter frame to deliver clear, high resolution images with rich analog color.”
Dolby Cinema and Premium Large Format

The Odyssey‘s website notes, “The Dolby Vision laser projection system with its 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio, brightness, and exact color rendering allows you to fully immerse yourself in The Odyssey. Dolby Vision allows you to experience every detail and nuance captured by the large format film cameras Christopher Nolan used in production. Your local Dolby Cinema will offer The Odyssey in two aspect ratios – 2.39:1 Cinema Scope or 1.85:1 Flat based on the native screen in the auditorium, allowing you to see the largest possible image on screen.”
The website adds, “A Premium Large Format (PLF) movie theater is an enhanced auditorium designed to offer a superior, more immersive cinematic experience. It features larger wall-to-wall screens, superior projection technology, including laser projection. You will see the movie in either 2.39:1 or 1.85:1 aspect ratio depending on the screen size in your theater of choice.”
