Grogu is one of the most popular and recognizable faces in modern pop culture, but “Baby Yoda” is actually not the character’s real name.

With The Mandalorian and Grogu now playing in theaters, many casual viewers are learning for the first time that the tiny green fan-favorite is actually named Grogu.

The adorable Force-sensitive character debuted in 2019 during season 1 of The Mandalorian starring Pedro Pascal and instantly became a viral sensation. Since then, Grogu has evolved quite a bit from a mysterious child hidden by bounty hunters into an integral part of the Star Wars universe.

Why everyone calls Grogu “Baby Yoda”

When Grogu first showed up in The Mandalorian, Lucasfilm kept the character’s identity a secret. Because the species looked similar to Jedi Master Yoda, people online gave him the “Baby Yoda” nickname.

The nickname exploded across social media, spawning countless memes and reaction GIFs, plus plenty of merch. Even though it has been years since the Disney+ series premiered, many people still refer to Grogu as Baby Yoda, despite his real name getting revealed in season 2.

Most importantly of all, however, is that Grogu is not actually Yoda as a baby, nor is Grogu confirmed to be directly related to him, though there are still plenty of rumors and theories floating around online dissecting the possibility.

Grogu’s back story explained

According to the series, Grogu was born the same year Anakin Skywalker and spent time training at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant before surviving Order 66 with the help of Kelleran Beq. During the events of the show, Grogu becomes closely bonded to bounty hunter Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal.

Over the course of the Disney+ series, Din Djarin essentially becomes Grogu’s adoptive father, and even formally adopts him at the end of season 3 as his apprentice. They settle into a low-key life working for the New Republic on Nevarro.

The Mandalorian and Grogu takes place after the events of The Mandalorian season 3 and is now playing in theaters. Find out when to expect the film to start streaming on Disney+. Watch the movie trailer!
