Zohran Mamdani is not interested in an increase in his salary.

The 34-year-old mayor of New York City declined a pay raise after city council approved a vote on Thursday (July 16).

The council voted to increase their own salaries, 42-6, which will raise their pay from $164,500 to $175,500, as well as raising the mayor’s salary from $258,750 to $305,800, per People.

However, despite all he’s accomplished with the city so far, the mayor has rejected his own raise and he explained why in a press conference that day.

“I will not accept a pay raise,” he confirmed with a laugh. “I haven’t knocked on anyone’s door in New York City, and they’ve said that their concern is that the mayor makes too little.”

This is the first salary increase for NYC officials in a decade. City Council justified the increase by citing rising costs that have gone up 30% since the last pay bump in 2016.

According to data compiled by Business Insider, Mayor Mamdani already makes more than all 50 governors in the US. Per their report, the highest-paid governor is Pennsylvania’s Josh Shapiro, with $253,870, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul is in second, with $250,000.

Earlier this month, Mamdani spoke out about a building that might fall in Midtown Manhattan. See what he said!
