Luigi Mangione‘s federal trial starts next year.
The 28-year-old, who is currently in prison awaiting his state and federal trials, went to court on Monday (June 29), where he learned his federal trial will begin in January of 2027.
Judge Garnett informed the court that the trial will not start in November as initially scheduled, “given jury selection,” via TMZ.
The federal case won’t kick off until the beginning of next year, with jury selection starting on January 5. During the process, about 40 to 50 people will be called in until they complete the jury. Opening statements are scheduled to start on January 25.
Luigi faces multiple federal charges in connection with the December 2024 shooting and murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Prosecutors originally sought the death penalty, but a federal judge dismissed the capital counts. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
He is still charged in state court with second-degree murder and weapons charges as well, and that trial is set for September 8.
Luigi Mangione‘s legal team is attempting to defend their client on the basis of his emotional state.
He recently turned 28 in prison, and received a $28,000 donation to his legal fund at the same time.
