The detail in House of the Dragon‘s latest episode that played out differently from the book

In the latest episode of HotD, Rhaenyra’s forces reclaimed King’s Landing after Aegon II fled the capital. During the takeover, Otto Hightower was found imprisoned beneath the Red Keep. Rhaenyra sentenced her longtime political rival to death and personally carried out the execution. After this act, which Rhaenyra sobbed through, she was able to take the throne for the first time.

How does Otto Hightower die in “Fire & Blood”?

Otto’s fate matched the outcome described in author George R.R. Martin‘s Fire & Blood, but the series changed how the moment played out.

In the book, Rhaenyra ordered Otto’s execution for his role in placing Aegon II on the Iron Throne, but the person who carried out the beheading was never actually identified. House of the Dragon instead depicted Rhaenyra herself delivering the fatal blow, making the confrontation far more personal than it was on the page.
