Spider-Noir is here!

The live-action series based on the Marvel comic Spider-Man Noir tells the story of Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), a seasoned, down on his luck private investigator in 1930s New York, who is forced to grapple with his past life, following a deeply personal tragedy, as the city’s one and only superhero.

Lamorne Morris, Li Jun Li, Karen Rodriguez, Abraham Popoola, Jack Huston, and Brendan Gleeson all star in the series.

Season 1 of the series launched today (Wednesday, May 27) on Prime Video, and the reviews are pouring in from critics and audiences alike.

What are the reviews saying about Spider-Noir?

Spider-Noir currently has a 91% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 93% audience score.

Financial Times gives it 4 out of 5, writing: “Audiences have had enough of the churn of movie sequels and their declining quality. But shows like this are well-crafted enough, adult enough, and just about original enough, to offer a deserved moment of reprieve.”

The Daily Telegraph also gives it a 4 out of 5, writing: “Spider-Noir is as much a tribute to the golden era of sleuthing flicks as it is to caped crusaders getting their tights in a twist.”

The LA Times says: “Something of a stunt, but one that offers a reasonable, (imperfectly) period-appropriate approach to the material.”

Vulture says: “Spider-Noir is just another disposable exercise in IP maintenance, but in the end, it’s best remembered as one more stop on the endlessly fascinating Nic Cage train before it barrels onto the next destination.”

AV Club gives it a C-, noting: “The best you can say about Spider-Noir is that it’s a noble, but ultimately failed experiment. Its lead clearly set out to create a character who didn’t feel entirely like a human being; what he got was one that never really feels like a person.”

Slant gives it 2.5 out of 4, and says: “Spider-Noir never undercuts its sense of atmosphere with a knowing wink, and it never alludes to a larger multiverse with crossovers and spin-offs waiting in the wings.”

Empire Magazine adds: “A big swing — oh, yes — that pays off from start to finish, this is an irresistible concoction, an utterly insane stew that somehow makes perfect sense. It is total joy.”
