Serena Williams is returning to tennis.
The 44-year-old tennis icon announced her return on Monday (June 1).
“THE QUEEN RETURNS Serena Williams is BACK & set for doubles at the #HSBCChampionships!” the HSBC Championships account wrote on social media.
The Queen’s Club Championships are starting on Saturday (June 6) at West Kensington in London, England. She is set to appear in the doubles tournament.
In a video posted to social media, Serena teases her return by getting a bunch of calls and texts, saying “I gotta change my number.”
“Guess everybody heard the news,” the screen reads.
“Good news travels fast,” she captioned the post.
Serena never formally announced her retirement, although it’s been three years since her last match, losing in the US Open to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovi?.
She was ranked as the world No. 1 in women’s singles by the WTA for 319 weeks, the third-most of all time, and finished as the year-end No. 1 five times.
The tennis superstar explained last year that after she gave birth, she found it hard to get back to the weight she “needed to be.” Find out what she said about her weight loss journey.
