Mya is reflecting on her decision to “marry herself” over a decade ago.
The 46-year-old singer recently looked back on the moment during an interview with E! News, explaining what she hoped people would take away from the symbolic gesture that sparked headlines in 2013.
Mya famously married herself and later even incorporated her wedding into the music video for her song “The Truth.” While the move generated plenty of conversation at the time, the singer says the message was always centered on self-discovery and personal growth.
“Getting to know yourself is first and foremost,” Mya shared. “It’s your internal compass and how you move, navigate, also make decisions.”
According to Mya, having a strong sense of self can help people avoid becoming overly influenced by outside opinions.
She went on to explain that those who are “uncertain about who [they] are” can be more easily “pushed and pulled, but also affected by other people’s opinions and criticisms.”
Reflecting on the reaction to her self-marriage, Mya said the conversation around it eventually grew much larger than she expected.
“So, when ‘I got married to myself’ in a music video that turned into this whole fiasco online,” she laughed, “what I was trying to convey was: Commit to you. Learn you. Take the time.”
The Grammy winner continued, “When you get right within, things begin to show up in your life, including romantic love. And then it’s also aligned with the best version or the better version of you, but we’re always evolving, so there’s always levels unlocked. But it’s great to start from a place of desire versus necessity.”
