Mitchel Musso is addressing his absence from the Hannah Montana anniversary special.
Back in March, Disney+ and Hulu released the Hannah Montana 20th Anniversary Special to celebrate two decades of the hit Disney Channel series.
While Miley Cyrus appeared in the special, Mitchel, who played Oliver Oken on the series, did not.
Mitchel just recently appeared on The Joe Vulpis Podcast where he revealed that he turned down appearing in the special and expressed his disappointment on how the reunion event played out.
“Of course they asked me [to be in it],” Mitchel said. “But, it wasn’t presented correctly [to me].”
He went on to explain that he truly valued the opportunity to play Oliver again especially since he’s been largely living out of the Hollywood spotlight for the past decade.
“I’ve been waiting ten years,” he stressed. “The people, they say, 20. My break’s been 10. It’s too long of a wait to do it in a way that isn’t even close to, in my opinion, correct.”
Instead of doing a reunion episode, Disney+ opted to do a retrospective look back at Hannah Montana that featured Miley being interviewed by Call Her Daddy‘s Alex Cooper and cameos by celeb guests including Selena Gomez and Chappell Roan.
Mitchel voiced his disappointment in anniversary special, saying, “The kid in me was banking on it, like ‘I can’t wait for us to all be on set again.’ And it just didn’t work out that way.”
“They just did it differently, and it is what it is,” Mitchel said. “It wasn’t the right thing. And I was busy doing something that was more important. But it would have been way more important if it would have just been an episode, or a movie. Of course that would have been more important. That would have been everything. I would have dropped everything — eat, breathe, sleep it.”
“Do an episode,” he added. “Do the show. The set’s still there.”
Mitchel further stressed that he would love to play Oliver again, but in a proper Hannah Montana episode.
“I need a wig,” he joked. “I’d want the hair, which is fine. I’ve worn [wigs] plenty of times on Disney. I’ve worn plenty of wigs. … I’d want to feel the part again. I’d want to put on that little polo again, and wear the … plaid shorts with the goofy shoes.”
Mitchel wasn’t the only Hannah Montana star that didn’t appear in the anniversary special Emily Osment – who played Miley’s BFF Lilly Truscott in the series – also explained why she wasn’t able to take part in the special.
