It’s official: Michael is making history yet again.
The Michael Jackson biopic just pushed past the $1 billion mark at the global box office, a historic first for a biopic.
In total thus far, the movie has brought in $371.8 million domestically and $629.8 million overseas, with an overall haul of $1.001 billion, per Variety.
The movie has broken several records along the way, including the opening weekend record for a music-based biopic, highest grossing music biopic of all time, Lionsgate’s biggest movie (and their first billion dollar making film), and the highest grossing film based on a real-life person, beating out Oppenheimer.
It’s now one of only two films to hit the billion mark in 2026, along with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
The film arrived in theaters on April 24, and was directed by Antoine Fuqua. It stars Jaafar Jackson, Nia Long, Laura Harrier, Juliano Krue Valdi, Miles Teller, and Colman Domingo.
Here’s a synopsis: “Michael is the cinematic portrayal of the life and legacy of one of the most influential artists the world has ever known. The film tells the story of Michael Jackson’s life beyond the music, tracing his journey from the discovery of his extraordinary talent as the lead of the Jackson Five, to the visionary artist whose creative ambition fueled a relentless pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world. Highlighting both his life off-stage and some of the most iconic performances from his early solo career, the film gives audiences a front-row seat to Michael Jackson as never before. This is where his story begins.”
A sequel to the smash-hit movie is in the works and Lionsgate’s main executive has revealed some details about what fans can expect.
The first movie in the Michael franchise charts the beginning of his career as a child singer in The Jackson 5 and eventually launching a solo career, much to the dismay of his father. The movie ends just as he is reaching the height of his career and there’s lots of his life that can still be explored. Find out what may happen in the sequel.
