Melissa Gilbert will not be returning to When Calls the Heart for the upcoming 14th season.
The 62-year-old Little House on the Prairie alum confirmed the news in an Instagram post, telling fans budget issues prevented her from reprising her role as Georgie McGill. Melissa appeared in seven episodes across seasons 12 and 13 of the Hallmark series.

“Many people have asked if I will be returning to When Calls the Heart this coming season,” Melissa wrote. “The answer to that is no.”
She said she had been told the decision came down to the show’s budget. Melissa made clear that she remains grateful for the role, describing her experience on the series as “lovely” and thanking the cast, crew, and the show’s devoted “Hearties.”
She also thanked executive producer Michael Landon Jr. for bringing her to Hope Valley.
“When one door closes, another one opens. Looking forward to whatever comes next,” she added.
Who Melissa played on the Hallmark series
Melissa joined When Calls the Heart as Inspector Georgie McGill, a forensic specialist who arrived in Hope Valley to help investigate a case involving rare coins.
The character shared a past with Judge Bill Avery, played by Jack Wagner, and their renewed connection eventually developed into a romance. Georgie’s return in season 13 gave viewers more of the pairing, leaving some fans hopeful that their story would continue.
Her special Little House on the Prairie connection
Melissa‘s casting also carried a meaningful connection to her most famous role. Michael Landon Jr.‘s father, the late Michael Langdon, played Charles Ingalls opposite Melissa‘s Laura Ingalls on Little House on the Prairie.
Could Georgie McGill return later?
For now, Melissa has only confirmed that she will not appear in season 14. Neither she nor Hallmark has said that Georgie’s time in Hope Valley is permanently over, so a future guest appearance remains possible, but nothing has been announced.
Hallmark has renewed When Calls the Heart for a 12-episode 14th season, which is scheduled to premiere in 2027.
