Mark Zuckerberg is telling his company’s employees that AI is the “most consequential technology of our lifetimes” amid thousands of layoffs at Meta.

8,000 employees, of 10% of the workforce, were laid off on Wednesday (May 20) to align for the AI era, with another 7,000 employees reassigned to new AI initiatives, according to the New York Times.

Janelle Gale, the company’s head of HR, told employees they should work from home this week, per the report.

“Success isn’t a given,” Mark wrote in a company-wide memo announcing the layoffs obtained by the news outlet.

“The companies that lead the way will define the next generation.”

“It’s always sad to say goodbye to people who have contributed to our mission and to building this company,” Mark also said, CNBC reports, expressing “gratitude to everyone leaving today for all of the hard work you’ve put into serving our community.”

“We’re transforming our company to make sure it will always be the best place for talented people to have the greatest impact. People tell us that they appreciate the ability to take greater ownership and execute their vision with less bureaucracy and management to navigate,” he added.

The company told workers last month that the job cuts were meant to help offset investments into other areas, like AI. Several employees have also signed a petition to stop the company’s recent installation of mouse-tracking software on their computers.
