With the new movie The Odyssey now in theaters, fans will want to revisit the 2004 movie Troy, which Christopher Nolan almost directed.
Brad Pitt stars as Achilles in the epic movie, which was directed by the late Wolfgang Petersen. He’s also known for directing movies like The NeverEnding Story, Outbreak, Air Force One, and The Perfect Storm.
Both Troy and The Odyssey are based on the epic poems by Homer. Troy is based on “The Iliad” while The Odyssey is based on the work of the same name.
Troy is billed as “an epic tale of passion, heroism, betrayal and war that has been passed from generation to generation since the dawn of civilization–the story of the battle for Troy. A thousand years before the time of Christ, Trojan prince Paris (Orlando Bloom) abducts the legendary Greek beauty Helen, queen of Sparta (Diane Kruger), starting a war led by heroes Achilles (Pitt) and Hector (Eric Bana) that devastates the ancient world.”

JustWatch.com notes that Troy is leaving AMC+ in at the end of July 2026. It’s unclear where the movie will stream next.

The movie has a 53% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes.
Audiences were more generous with their reviews, with a 74% audience score on the website.
Troy didn’t get much recognition from awards shows, but it did earn an Academy Award nomination for Best Costume Design in 2005.
