Hayden Panettiere is looking back on a particularly memorable experience from her early acting career.
Ahead of the release of her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, the 36-year-old Scream star opened up to Entertainment Weekly about filming the 2004 movie Raising Helen and one particularly surprising on-screen moment.
In the film, Hayden played Audrey, the teenage niece of Kate Hudson’s character Helen, who suddenly becomes responsible for raising her late sister’s three children after a tragic car accident.
Hayden Panettiere was only 13 years old filming Raising Helen
Hayden was only 13 years old when the movie was filmed, a fact she says still surprises people when she looks back at photos from the project.
“Can you believe I was 13 in that movie? At certain points, they had me dressed up like you would’ve thought [I was way older],” Hayden told the outlet. “I look back at pictures, people tell me how young I look now, but it’s crazy because when I was 13, I almost looked like I was a teenager — the tummy out, the smokey eyes.”’
Hayden’s on-screen love interest in the movie was reportedly played by a 20-year-old actor
The actress also recalled filming her first-ever kissing scene for the movie, likely with the character BZ, played by Michael Esparza.
“My mom [was] watching me with a 20-something-year-old guy while I was 13. I was shocked that he used his tongue! I couldn’t believe it, and I didn’t want to make a big deal out of it. I was like, ‘Oh, that’s how it’s done. Got it.’”
Despite the unexpected moment, Hayden said she looks back on the experience fondly.
“I’ve got a lot of very great memories, funny memories from that, for sure,” she added.
