Gayle King is sharing her thoughts on her ex William Bumpus‘ recent public apology for cheating on her almost 40 years ago.
The 71-year-old news anchor and the attorney were married for eleven years, from 1982 to 1993, and share two children together.
Earlier this week, while appearing on Call Her Daddy, Gayle opened up about the cheating that happened when he hooked up with a close friend of hers. She found out as she came home from the airport earlier than expected and found him in a towel. He then confessed someone was there and she charged in to find her friend.
After the episode, William issued an apology, telling TMZ, “My deepest apologies to Gayle, to our daughter Kirby and her husband, Virgil, to our son William and his wife, Elise, and to our three grandchildren, for the pain I caused decades ago. Those actions were mine. I have long owned them — including publicly in my own words in 2016, which still stand.”
He added that she has every right to talk about a “painful chapter” in her life that changed their marriage and says he’s “endlessly grateful” to her.
The next morning, Gayle reacted to his apology, noting she was surprised he said something.
“I did not know he was going to do it,” she told TMZ on Thursday (May 28). “When I got up this morning and read it, I was very, very surprised. He didn’t say anything to me about it, but I’m very appreciative.”
She also said she was surprised that the outlet “found him” as he is notoriously a private person.
Gayle said she was shocked “he was even talking because he never talks. So I was surprised, but I can also say I appreciated what he had to say. That was a very painful time.”
“Anyone who has been through it knows how painful it is,” she added. “But I also know that you can go through it and get through it on the other side. This happened so long ago that we have both healed and we’ve both moved on. And the reason why I can talk about it so candidly is because it has been so much time that has passed. I’m in a really great place and so is he.”
