In August of 1997, Perino met her now-husband, English businessman Peter McMahon, on a flight.
They had a chance encounter on the airplane, where they sat next to one another.
“We had polite conversation at first. I asked him about his book, he asked me how my trip was, but we ended up talking for two and a half hours. We call it love at first flight,” she once told People.
About finding love with an older man, she said she “was worried about telling her friends and family she’d begun dating a man 18 years her senior.” She added that her father approved “because I was [always] a little bit in a hurry in my life.”
She ended up moving to England the next year and they married.
They ended up moving back to the US in 1999, and she eventually got back into politics.
“Choosing to be loved is not a career-limiting decision. I truly believe that nothing I have accomplished would have been possible without him. It wouldn’t have meant as much,” she said about their long love affair.
