The official scoring on Dancing With the Stars combines the judges’ scores and the audience votes, but we’ll never find out the audience vote numbers.

While we always know the ranking of the judges’ scores, ABC never tells the audience how the viewers are voting, so it’s often a massive surprise when certain contestants advance to the next round. For example, even though she had the highest overall judges scores for the full season, Whitney Leavitt was eliminated before the finale.
So, why won’t the producers reveal the audience votes?

When asked if they’d ever release the exact number of viewer votes, showrunner Conrad Green told THR, “I’d prefer not to.”
Green thinks that giving out the data “has a very strong chance of disincentivizing people taking part or might affect the votes going forward, because people understand who to vote for. In all kinds of ways, like any election or vote, you don’t want to be prejudicing the election or vote.”
