Individuals and several organizations, such as Furvent Animal Rescue and Advocacy, demand a call for accountability as American Bully, Axle, tragically lost his life after being brutally beaten in Sadanga, Mountain Province. A CCTV footage of the incident went viral online, grabbing the attention of netizens.
Eyewitnesses state that Axle had only urinated on a man, but was not acting aggressive. Based on a “pamahiin” or cultural belief about dogs urinating on people, Axle was beaten until he collapsed.
A settlement was made regarding the situation, but with no one coming forward to authenticate the footage, the case is left without legal grounding and remains not admissible in court.
Under Philippine law, specifically the Animal Welfare Act (RA 8485, as amended by RA 10631), causing harm or death to an animal constitutes a criminal offense, punishable by imprisonment and fines. The fact that a settlement was made does not diminish the gravity of the crime or make it any less punishable.
It has been reported that the individual responsible for the cruelty may be a government employee, raising questions about accountability. Netizens demand the local government of Sadanga to take appropriate action.
The justice system requires a witness with personal knowledge of the event to proceed. Without this, Axle’s case cannot move forward.
