Zendaya‘s character Emma confesses to her fiance Charlie (Pattinson) and their best friends Mike (Mamoudou Athie) and Rachel (Alana Haim) that she once planned a high school shooting, but never followed through.

Emma is deaf in one ear and she tells the group that she lost her hearing while practicing shooting a rifle in the forest, even though she had previously told Charlie that she was born that way. She says that she decided not to follow through with her plan after seeing how another shooting in her community had a major impact on the students in her school. After cancelling her plot, she changed her focus to ending gun violence and became an activist.

Rachel is taken aback by the revelation as her cousin was paralyzed in a shooting.

Charlie is having a hard time grappling with the revelation and there are many images of both young Emma and a current Emma holding guns while he fantasizes about what she was like as a child, and if she’s still that way now.

Charlie eventually asks his co-worker Misha a hypothetical question about how she would react if she found out her boyfriend had planned a school shooting as a kid. She says she would call the police as he would have to be a psychopath, even if he claims to have changed. Charlie storms out of the room, but when Misha checks on him in his office, he kisses her and they start removing clothes, but he stops it.

Rachel backs out of being the maid-of-honor and says that she’s not attending the wedding, but Charlie convinces her to attend.

The Finale

At the wedding, things start off well, but then Rachel gives a tense maid-of-honor speech that makes Emma feel uneasy. She goes to the bathroom to cool off, but while in there, overhears Misha talking about a school shooting.

Emma tells Charlie what she heard and asks him if he’s told anyone about the school shooting confession. When he lies and says no, she assumes Rachel has been telling people, so she leaves the room to get Misha and brings her back. After Misha enters the room with the newly-married couple, she misreads the situation and she immediately confesses to the kiss, but says that Charlie was the one who kissed her.

After Emma finds out about Charlie’s betrayal, they go back to their table at the wedding and it’s time for them to give their speeches. Charlie goes first and it does not go well. He tells their guests that Emma “didn’t do anything” and he apologizes for cheating on her with Misha, which prompts Misha’s boyfriend to attack Charlie.

Amid the chaos of the fight, which leaves Charlie bloody and bruised, Emma leaves the wedding and no one knows where she went.

In the final scene, Charlie goes back to their apartment with a bloody and bruised face and blood all over his tuxedo. Emma is not there.

Earlier in the movie, the couple joked about going to a diner after the wedding to enjoy some casual food as they assumed they would not eat during the event.

Charlie goes to the diner and orders food. While he’s sitting at a table and waiting for his food, Emma enters the diner, walks past Charlie and orders for herself at the counter. She walks over to the table and asks if she can sit there too. Charlie says, “Of course.”

Charlie breaks down in tears as he begins to apologize to for everything that happened, but Emma cuts him off. After previously trying to work through issues using a role play situation, which Charlie didn’t want to do, Emma tries again. She reintroduces herself to Charlie and asks if he lives in the area. They hold hands and smile at each other as the movie ends.

The ending implies that Charlie and Emma, who are now married, are going to restart their relationship and try to work through all the issues that plagued them in the week of their wedding.
