Last month, Sky responded to a meme that suggested Charli, whom Sky has collaborated with over the years, dragged Sky back into the recording studio for the Wuthering Heights soundtrack.
“Charli getting Sky Ferreira in the studio for Wuthering Heights,” the meme reads.
“To record my old songs******,” Sky replied in the comments.
Then this week, a user @skyferrori questioned Sky‘s “form of income,” to which she responded in his Instagram comments.
“Someone sent me your X account. I toured for years. I work. I hate to break it to you, but your favorite artist records my old songs.I hope that answers your question. Xoxoxo,” she commented on his Instagram.
She returned with a lengthier comment afterward: “I wasn’t going to say anything. I’m over being dragged & humiliated for no reason. It brought back a lot of things I have worked really hard to move past. No one “saved” or helped me. My life was destroyed for over 10 years & it’s a public joke. Publications etc. It isn’t funny. It allows people to disrespect & take advantage of me, or to manipulate multiple situations based on their perception of me. I wasn’t allowed to do anything. I mind my own business so I don’t know why everything is so loaded. I don’t want to be harassed. I don’t want the actions of multiple people f-cking things up for me & my album. I’m an honest person. People don’t care about the truth. It’s about whatever narrative is fitting or more exciting. I’m glad I can finally move on with my life.”
When the user claimed to speak to an “insider” in a since-deleted tweet, the “insider” claimed that Charli xcx’s “Eyes Of The World” and the “Chains Of Love” intro were taken from Sky‘s demo “Ancient Idols,” and that “Altars” was originally a 2015 Sky song as well.
“Your industry ‘insider’ is wrong. Close but wrong,” she again commented on the user’s Instagram, adding: “I’m not going to get into it but it was definitely more than an intro. I have proof of everything with dates. It isn’t worth the trouble bc I know how the world works.”
Sky has been candid about battling her record label, Capitol Records, for over a decade before being released on the anniversary of her critically acclaimed debut album.
“They waited until the 10-year anniversary of Night Time, My Time to drop me via an automated message that got forwarded to me. And it was a weekend! After months of not hearing back from them! It was pretty—I’m still trying to figure out the words I can use to talk about it that won’t get me in trouble. But I also don’t really care about getting in trouble, because what else can they really do to me at this point? My relationship with them was obviously a bit fraught, and it’s never been very simple to explain. But to let me know I’ve been dropped from the label in such an impersonal way was clearly so personal,” she told Vogue in 2024.
“It was their way of saying: ‘You can have fans write ‘Free Sky’ in the clouds with an airplane, but we still own you.’ They kept me from putting out new music for 10 years as a way of making me look like I’m incapable of it, like it was my fault that I don’t technically own anything I record. I was already dreading the 10-year anniversary of my album because it’s sad…that album clearly meant something to people, and I am proud of that. But it shouldn’t have to remind me of another year of being trapped in a mess that I didn’t create. They want me to look responsible by dragging it out and blocking me from releasing music even after already being blocked from so many other opportunities because of them.”
Sky is featured and credited on the song “Eyes of the World” on Wuthering Heights, and her frequent collaborator Justin Raisen also worked on the film’s soundtrack with Charli. Fans have speculated that the music Sky worked on with Justin and could not release while in her label deal seemingly ended up going to Charli.
