Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve‘s new movie Fjord won the top prize at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival!
The actors joined director Cristian Mungiu on stage to accept the Palme d’Or during the festival’s closing ceremony on Saturday night (May 23) in Cannes, France.
This marks Mungiu‘s second Palme d’Or after previously winning in 2007 for his debut feature 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. The new movie also marks his first film shot in English and Norwegian, after making all of his previous movies in Romanian.

Fjord currently has a 91% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes following its Cannes debut.
SYNOPSIS: The Gheorghius, a devout Romanian Norwegian couple, resettle in a village set in a distant fjord where they become close to their neighbours, the Halbergs. Their children bond despite their different education. When adolescent Elia Gheorghiu shows up at school with some bruises on her body, the community asks itself if the traditional education that the Gheorghiu children get from their parents might have anything to do with it.
The movie doesn’t have a wide theatrical release date yet, but it will likely come out in theaters in late 2026.

Fjord marks the movie studio Neon’s seventh consecutive win for the Palme d’Or.
The studio previously entered the main competition at the festival, and won, with Parasite in 2019, Titane in 2021 following the canceled 2020 festival, Triangle of Sadness in 2022, Anatomy of a Fall in 2023, Anora in 2024, and It Was Just an Accident in 2025.

Renate and Sebastian were joined on stage by presenter Tilda Swinton, who was dressed in a red Chanel gown.
