Maggie Gyllenhaal is reflecting on her relationship with brother Jake Gyllenhaal and jealousy she felt at a young age.
As she gears up for the release of her highly-anticipated film The Bride!, Maggie is recalling how she grew up with an interest in envy.
“In general, I am very interested in envy. I think there’s a reason it’s a seven deadly sin. I’m interested in it in terms of watching other people’s movies come out. Admiration versus envy. What creates it? I think it’s usually feeling starving, like you don’t have enough,” Maggie tells The New York Times.

She says she actually reached out to Wuthering Heights director Emerald Fennell ahead of the romantic drama.
“And just the act of reaching out to her — and she’s great — frees the competition up and you realize: No, no. We’re actually 100 percent on the same team,” she explained. “There absolutely is enough to go around.”
However, when she was young, Maggie says she didn’t realize that as Jake “was a movie star right away.”
“I don’t think I was in touch with the envy, but it was there,” she admits.
The Brokeback Mountain star has a supporting role in The Bride!, marking the second time the siblings have worked together since the 2001 film Donnie Darko.
Maggie had nothing but praise for her brother and his work in the upcoming movie.
“I waited until I was absolutely sure that asking him to do this part was the right thing to do. I remember asking him and tearing up alone in this hotel room I was in, because it meant so much to me. It meant so much for me to interact with him,” she shared.
The Bride! hits theaters on March 6. Watch the trailer!
