Amazon is sending out $2.5 billion back to its Prime subscribers to resolve a lawsuit from the Federal Trade Commission and payments are going out soon.
Amazon was accused of misleading customers to get them to sign up for Prime and then making it difficult for them to cancel the membership.
$1.5 billion is being paid out to eligible customers and an additional $1 billion is being paid for civil penalties.
The company said in a statement, “Amazon and our executives have always followed the law and this settlement allows us to move forward and focus on innovating for customers. We work incredibly hard to make it clear and simple for customers to both sign up or cancel their Prime membership, and to offer substantial value for our many millions of loyal Prime members around the world. We will continue to do so, and look forward to what we’ll deliver for Prime members in the coming years.”
So, who is eligible? How much will you be refunded? And how do you get your money?

To get a refund, you must meet three requirements, according to NBC News:
- 1. Must be a United States customer of Amazon Prime.
- 2. Must have signed up for an Amazon Prime subscription through a “challenged enrollment flow” between June 23, 2019, and June 23, 2025. (The challenged enrollment flow is either the universal Prime decision page, shipping selection page, single page checkout, or the Prime Video enrollment flow)
- 3. Must have used three or less Amazon Prime benefits in any 12-month period after enrolling for Amazon Prime. (These include Prime Video, Prime Music, and other free offerings for members)
If you’re eligible for a refund, you’ll receive an email from Amazon between November 12 and December 24. You must accept your refund within 15 days by either PayPal or Venmo. If you do not claim your payment, Amazon will mail a check after that 15-day period passes. The check will go to your default shipping address and checks should be cashed within 60 days.
