Helen Mirren is sharing her thoughts on the future of James Bond.

The 80-year-old Oscar-winning actress stars in the upcoming film The Thursday Murder Club, where she plays a retired spy. But while she embraces the idea of women in espionage roles, she told Saga Magazine that Bond should remain a man.

“So many women have worked in that world. She’s a manifestation of a reality, that’s for sure,” Helen said of her character Elizabeth, before adding: “But not so much fun as Bond!”

She continued, “I’m such a feminist, but James Bond has to be a guy. You can’t have a woman. It just doesn’t work. James Bond has to be James Bond, otherwise it becomes something else.”

The comments come as fans continue to speculate about who will step into the 007 role following Daniel Craig’s departure in 2021.

With Amazon now overseeing the franchise, insiders told Variety earlier this summer that the studio is interested in casting a British actor under 30, with names like Jacob Elordi, Tom Holland, and Harris Dickinson in the mix.

Denis Villeneuve is attached to direct, while Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight is writing the script.

Helen’s co-star Pierce Brosnan, who famously played Bond in four films, said he’s eager to see the torch passed.

“I’m so excited to see the next man come on the stage and to see a whole new exuberance and life for this character,” Pierce said to Saga.

“I adore the world of James Bond. It’s been very good to me. It’s the gift that keeps giving,” he added. “And I’m just a member of the audience now, sitting back, saying: ‘Show us what you’re going to do.’”

Find out who played coy amid speculation about him getting the role!
