In the episode, he struggled to keep up and while checking in with staff, he admitted that he was pushing himself “as hard as I can,” but reaching a point of exhaustion.
“I’m scared of failure,” Eric admitted, reflecting on how his football career ended. “It’s one of the disappointments I have, just the way I went out. I was fearful to fail being cut later in my career, and it was easier to retire than push.”
However, the next day, he got injured during a challenge.
“Eric hasn’t had this kind of physical challenge since he’s played football,” Jessie said. “I want him to have that time again.”
When trying to stand up and carry his bags back to the car, he had spasms in his back. After visiting the doctor, they told him it was not safe for him to continue.
“I’m concerned that we can’t inflict any more punishment on that hip,” the doctor said. “I don’t think we can really safely let it carry on.”
After returning to the bunks, he told Jessie James that he was medically withdrawn, and she stood up and started packing.
“You sure you don’t want to stay?” he asked, to which she said, “Yeah, we’re going together.”
“Let’s go home,” she added on their way out. “We ride together. We fly together.”
Eric and Jessie James weren’t the only married couple on the show this season…
