Chad Powers currently has a 55% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Guardian gave it 4 out of 5 stars, writing: “It’s a mutant redemption story with a satisfyingly chewy moral core: can you truly be redeemed if it involves lying to every single person on the planet? All this, plus it manages to be funny and charming.”
Variety wrote: “Even though Chad Powers helps cement Powell’s rise by placing him at the top of the call sheet, the college football quarterback seems unlikely to be remembered as one of his signature roles.”
USA Today gives it 2 out of 4 stars, writing: “Although the potential is there, the result is deeply disappointing. Fake noses, questionable Southern accents and gay panic jokes can’t make up for a show that lacks soul.”
TIME says: “Powell might have been appealing enough to make this goofy premise work if Russ and his alter ego weren’t two of the most obnoxious TV characters in recent memory—and if the show didn’t seem cobbled together from older, better sports comedies.”
IndieWire gives it a C-, writing: “Chad Powers manages to waste Glen Powell. Saddled with an uninteresting jerk half the time and a muzzled non-entity the other half, there’s only a handful of moments in the first six episodes where Powell’s star power shines through.”
