The Australia premiere of Avatar: Fire And Ash has been canceled after 16 people were tragically killed in a mass shooting

On Sunday (December 14), two gunman, a father and son, opened fire at a beachside celebration as the Jewish community in Bondi Beach gathered to mark the beginning of Hanukkah. 16 people were killed in the terror attack and more than 40 people were injured.

In the wake of the deadly shooting, Avatar event organizers announced on Monday (December 15) that both the premiere and press junket for the new movie has been canceled.

Keep reading to find out more…“Out of deep respect for the victims of the Bondi shooting, the planned Avatar: Fire and Ash premiere event today in Sydney has been cancelled,” read the statement, per Rolling Stone Australia. “Our hearts are with the community, the victims, their families and loved ones.”

Director James Cameron and star Sam Worthington were scheduled to attend both events. Earlier in the weekend, the two were in New Zealand promoting the new movie.

Avatar: Fire and Ash will be released in theaters this Friday, December 19.
