Tom Holland and Zendaya went from on-screen love interests to a real-life couple!
The 30-year-old actor and the almost 30-year-old actress reprise their roles as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Michelle Jones-Watson, aka MJ, in the new film Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
With the new movie out, we’re taking a look back at their complete relationship timeline, from when they first met to now being married!
2016-2017: Tom Holland and Zendaya met while working on Spider-Man: Homecoming
Tom and Zendaya, affectionately referred to as Tomdaya by fans, seemingly first met in early 2016 during the casting process of Spider-Man: Homecoming. She was cast in March of that year, and filming took place that summer.
They walked their first red carpet together, as pictured above, at the Spider-Man: Homecoming photo call in Madrid in June 2017.
It was then rumored that they had started dating while filming the movie.
“They started seeing each other while they were filming Spider-Man,” a source told People at the time. “They’ve been super careful to keep it private and out of the public eye but they’ve gone on vacations with each other and try and spend as much time as possible with one another.”
Before the movie’s premiere, they said they were the best of friends, and in August 2017, Zendaya said that they were not dating and were just friends.
2019-2021: Tom and Zendaya film Spider-Man: Far From Home and start dating
Tom, Zendaya, and more then reunited for their second Spider-Man film, Far From Home, which was released in 2019.
While they shared their first on-screen kiss in Far From Home, as far as we know, their relationship didn’t start until they worked on the third installment, Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Filming took place in late 2020, and by summer 2021, it was revealed that Tom and Zendaya were dating!
The couple was seen kissing at a red light while driving around Los Angeles on July 1, 2021, confirming they were dating after rumors started.
Just two months later, Tom made their relationship Instagram official by posting a cute photo of them for her birthday, writing, “My MJ, have the happiest of birthdays. Gimme a call when you’re up xxx.”
She commented, “Calling now,” with a heart emoji.
Late 2021: Tom and Zendaya make their first red carpet appearance as a couple
In December 2021, Tom and Zendaya made their red carpet debut as a couple while attending the Spider-Man: No Way Home photo call in London!
As the movie hit theaters that month, Zendaya shared her own Instagram post for Tom.
“My Spider-Man, I’m so proud of you,” she captioned her post. “Some things never change and good thing??.”
In June 2023, Tom gushed about being in love.
“I need you to fall in love with me, really for it to work. So, long game. Probably making a movie with each other—it definitely helps when the characters you’re playing are falling in love with one another, you can sort of blur the lines a little bit. That’s kind of where my rizz is at,” Tom told BuzzFeed.
“And, you know, I’m locked up. So I’m happy and in love so I’ve got no need for rizz,” he added.
Tom even called Zendaya his childhood crush!
Early 2025: Zendaya sparks engagement speculation at 2025 Golden Globes
In January 2025, Zendaya stepped out for the 2025 Golden Globes, where she was nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for her work in Challengers.
On the carpet, she was seen wearing a gorgeous ring on THAT finger, immediately sparking rumors that she and Tom secretly got engaged.
When asked by a reporter on the carpet if she was engaged, she simply “kept showing her ring, smiled coyly and shrugged her shoulders mysteriously.”
It was then confirmed that they got engaged within a couple of weeks before the awards show. Tom reportedly popped the question during a “romantic and intimate” moment over the holidays.
2026: Tom and Zendaya get married and promote two new films together
In March 2026, Zendaya‘s longtime stylist, Law Roach, revealed that the couple secretly tied the knot!
While attending the 2026 Actor Awards, he was asked about their upcoming wedding, and he revealed, “The wedding has already happened. You missed it.”
When asked if that was actually true, Law said, “It’s very true.”
Neither Tom nor Zendaya confirmed their marriage until a few months later!
Tom and Zendaya kicked off the Spider-Man: Brand New Day press tour with their first red carpet appearance together in five years at the Madrid photo call in June.
In an interview, Tom seemingly confirmed their marriage when he was asked about viral AI wedding photos. He said his grandma was worried she wasn’t invited and was asked if he had to send similar messages to family members about missing the wedding. Tom replied, “No, because they were all there.”
After promoting Spider-Man for a couple of weeks in June, Tom and Zendaya took a break to promote their other new movie, The Odyssey.
Throughout both press tours, Tom started referring to Zendaya as his wife, further confirming that they are, in fact, married.
On July 29th, Tom and Zendaya coupled up at the final Spider-Man: Brand New Day premiere in London, just days before the film officially hit theaters.
Zendaya could, once again, be seen wearing both the engagement ring and a wedding band, as she had been doing throughout their last couple months of press.
This will likely be our last red carpet appearance from them together for at least a couple years, as they only pose together at events of projects they are both in. They famously keep their work and personal lives mostly separate, choosing to keep their love life between themselves and those closest to them.
It has been confirmed that Spider-Man will return in a future movie, though it’s unclear when Zendaya’s MJ will next be seen on screen. Likely in a fifth Spidey film!
