JustJared.com got to sit down for a chat with Big Brother host Julie Chen Moonves, and we asked her about her early picks for standouts on BB28.
Last week, Julie told EW that her early picks for season standouts were Jason De Puy (who you may know by his drag name, Salina EsTitties), LaTrice Verrett, and Ashley Trail.
As of today (July 15), Julie is changing her answer just a bit. She’s sticking with Jason and LaTrice, nixing Ashley from her list, and adding Survivor‘s Dee Valladares to her list.
She also told us that, at this time, they are all sitting in the shadow of our current Head of Household, Dee.
“They’re in the shadow right now, in my opinion, of Dee. Dee…I was privately against two Survivors coming back. I wasn’t against [Cirie Fields] coming back because we still had that that Big Brother element that she was playing with her son. So that felt very germane to Big Brother. But then I was told, oh, this guy, [Rick Devens]. And I did my deep dive and I was like, okay, I like you,” she said.
Julie Chen talked about both Survivor players, and how Dee just seems to “get it”
She didn’t like one game move made by Rick. Seemingly, Julie is talking about a moment from Sunday’s episode where Rick told non-alliance members about The Red Corner.
If you haven’t seen Sunday’s episode, Rick compromised his and Dee‘s covert strategy by revealing the existence of their decoy alliance, The Red Corner, to Drew and Angela. Dee was blindsided, but Rick explained that he wanted to be transparent as he built a second, fake alliance. Dee questioned why he felt the need to share that information.
Julie commented on this: “Rick Devens, he lost me because of his loose lips. I thought, dude, you may get Survivor, but you don’t get [Big Brother]. When he was telling Dee, ‘Oh yeah, and then I told him about this.’ And she was like, ‘Why did you do that?’”
Regarding Dee, she added, “And the fact that she gets it, I thought, wow, I would love to see her make history and be the first person to win both shows.” If you don’t know, Dee won Survivor 45 and if she also won Big Brother, she would indeed make history as the first to win both CBS shows. Julie added, “And again, affinity bias, a female to do that, more power to you.”
Julie Chen Moonves said she’s “still pulling” for LaTrice
She added, “So I’m still pulling for LaTrice. Again, affinity bias. I’m 56, she’s 57. She works at a shoe store in the Upper East Side, I used to live there. So I relate to her to her. I’m from Queens New York born and raised. And then Jason, I love his story…I know his backstory when he was at the height of RuPaul’s Drag Race. His mother was dying of cancer…And the way he tells it, his story is so beautiful.”

Julie added about Jason, “I love that he’s so honest and going into this game saying, you know, people know [Salina EsTitties], but Big Brother, they’re going to see Jason. And so far what I’m learning about him, I love him. So I think he gets it. I think he gets ultimately, this is a game of one. Yes, you need alliances and you need help, but they’re all your competitors.”

As for why Ashley is removed, she shared, “So I’m still pulling for all of them. But Ashley, I don’t think she, I think her youth contributes to her not getting the game. And I think she’s may not be long for Big Brother. And that would be sad for me because my teenage son has a crush on her and that’s how he can spend time with me watching Big Brother. So things change on a dime.”
