Joel McHale confirmed that he did replace Patrick Dempsey in the latest Scream movie, where he played the husband of Neve Campbell‘s Sidney Prescott.
“Patrick Dempsey played the husband in [Scream 3], and he was supposed to play this one,” Joel confirmed on an episode of “Inside of You With Michael Rosenbaum.”
“And I don’t know how it went down. I don’t know if it was schedule or money. Patrick, please forgive me if I’m f-king this up. But I get there, and his nameplate is on my chair. I tried to keep it, they wouldn’t let me,” he said. On being offered the part, he explained, “They were already shooting, and I was thrilled. I couldn’t believe I was there. I would have paid for this…. They offered it, and they needed me there the next day.”
In Scream 3, Patrick played the role of Mark Kincaid, a detective. Sidney and Mark were not actually married in the 2000 film, but he was helping solve her case.
Fans clocked that in the 2022 Scream movie, Sidney refers to her husband as “Mark,” leading fans to believe the characters got married at some point.
In 2024, Patrick teased that he’d be returning for the 2026 Scream movie. However, the role of “Mark” ended up going to Joel.
