Olivia Rodrigo is opening up about a relationship’s end on one of the most poignant songs on her new records, “less.”
The 23-year-old singer-songwriter just dropped her new album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love, and one of the songs has especially gained interest for its emotional storytelling.
“less” sees Olivia recalling the final moments of her romance, including a recreation of their favorite date.
“We tried to recreate our favorite date but we didn’t laugh much this time / Our trip to Big Sur only confirmed this isn’t what it should feel like,” she sings.
“And I could try convincing you they’re just intrusive thoughts but you’ve seen me truly happy, so you know right now I’m not / If loving me means crying on the curb at LAX well, then I guess I wish, I wish, I wish you loved me less.“
“A song like ‘less’ was added, obviously, later in the album making process, and I think it was us trying to practice a little bit of restraint,” she explained of the song’s creation on Popcast.
As with many of the other songs on the album, some fans speculate that it’s about her real-life split from ex Louis Partridge last year after two years of dating.
