Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, and Matt Damon, three co-stars from Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey, are on separate GQ covers to promote the new film.

The film is slated to be released on July 17, 2026.

We’re breaking down some of Tom‘s interview highlights here.

There was a big conflict that almost kept him from doing both The Odyssey and Spider-Man 4

Tom revealed in this interview that Spider-Man and The Odyssey were originally supposed to shoot at the exact same time, making it impossible for him to have done both.

“So I said to Chris, like, ‘Look, I want to do this movie, but if I’m going to do it, I’m going to have to call Sony and have a very uncomfortable conversation,’?” Tom recalled, going to Tom Rothman, the head of Sony Pictures.

Sony then agreed to push Spider-Man filming, and one reason why was because of Christopher Nolan.

Tom recalled, “I think one of the reasons why Sony were happy to move is because Chris has that reputation of ‘This movie isn’t going to go five months over, and we aren’t actually going to lose Tom for two years.’ Any other director, it might have been a slightly different conversation.”

GQ noted, “The Odyssey started on the day Nolan said it would and finished nine days early.”

In addition, Tom revealed that the extra time given to Spider-Man actually allowed them to secure director Destin Daniel Cretton.

The Odyssey almost saved Spider-Man because we wouldn’t have had Destin. He wouldn’t have been ready to make the movie when we were ready to go. We wouldn’t have had the six-month period to develop the script with Destin to get it to a place where it is now. And I truly believe that we’ve made the best version of any Spider-Man movie going. So while it was a tough pill to swallow for Sony, I think in hindsight, they’re very grateful that it happened.”

He also reflected on his fast rise to fame in Hollywood and his early years in the spotlight.

“I was obviously drinking back then. I probably was enjoying myself a lot and was right in the middle of the Spider-Man run, which was the time of my life. I was falling in love. I was making movies that I was really proud of. I was building a career that I was really excited about. And then now I have had this amazing moment where I feel like I got to hit the reset button and end the chapter of being a kid in Hollywood.” By the way, Tom is now sober.

He also spoke out about taking a lengthy break from the spotlight

“I needed a break, and I felt like I’d overworked and I needed to do some growing up in my personal life, which required me to have some time at home. And then also I just wanted to make sure that I was always in love with what I was doing. I think to do what we do, we’re so lucky, and the moment it becomes a chore, there’s something wrong. I don’t know if there was a moment where I doubted being in love with it, but it just felt a little bit like I was not doing my best work, because I was just going to work.”

He then was asked how long he would play Spider-Man

As he just turned 30 years old, there are questions about how long he’ll play Spider-Man, who is famously a high school student when he becomes the superhero.

“I would love to pass the baton on, but I haven’t achieved that yet … I think the truth is that playing Spider-Man has been the joy of my life. I now kind of stand on the plinth of like, I’ll do it for as long as they’ll have me.”

And, of course, Tom did mention his longtime love Zendaya

Zendaya also has a role in The Odyssey, if you did not know.

Tom said he “went to set her first day of work because I just wanted to be there,” but confirmed they don’t share any scenes together.
