The new horror movie Backrooms is now in theaters and it’s shattering box office records in its first weekend.
The film, directed by 20-year-old Kane Parsons when he was only 19, has a chilling premise: a strange doorway appears in the basement of a furniture showroom, leading into a disorienting and seemingly endless maze of rooms.
Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve lead the cast, alongside Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett and Lukita Maxwell. The movie is based on Kane‘s viral Backrooms series on YouTube, which gained massive attention online for its unsettling liminal space horror concept.
The movie grossed $38 million on its opening day on Friday, May 29, including $10.4 million from Thursday night previews.
After just one day, the movie shattered film studio A24’s record for biggest opening weekend, which was previously held by 2024’s Civil War with $25.5 million.
A24’s top-grossing movie of all time is Marty Supreme, which made $96 million in its domestic run. Backrooms will likely surpass that number after four or five days in theaters. Variety is estimating that the film will gross $85 million to $90 million in weekend one.
