Stewart McLean may have been the victim of a homicide, according to Canadian authorities investigating the actor’s disappearance.
The actor, who appeared in Netflix’s Virgin River and several other TV series filmed in British Columbia, was last seen on May 15 at his residence in Lions Bay. A missing person report was filed three days later on May 18, and Stewart has now been missing for a week.
According to People, police uncovered evidence that led investigators to believe Stewart may have been the victim of a homicide.
Stewart played a bar patron in an episode of Virgin River. The actor also appeared in shows like Happy Face, Arrow, Travelers, and Murder in a Small Town.
Squamish RCMP Sgt. Vanessa Munn shared an update on Friday (May 22).
“Squamish RCMP continues to work closely with IHIT and the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) to advance the investigation,” Munn said.
One of Stewart’s neighbors, Russ Meiklejohn, told police it was difficult to imagine anyone wanting to hurt the actor, describing Stewart as someone who was always friendly within the close-knit community.
“That’s just so hard to think that he’s, like, gone. Because he was part of this network, this community, as tiny as it is, he was a big part of it,” said Russ’ wife Dorothy.
“I think most people are quite incredulous,” Russ added, referring to the dozens of police officers now investigating the case in their small village.
Anyone with information related to the investigation is encouraged to call 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or email [email protected].
