Donald Trump is addressing his dance moves.
During a rally on Friday (May 1) in Sumterville, Fla., the 79-year-old President talked dancing to the Village People‘s 1978 mega-hit song “Y.M.C.A.”, which he referred to as the”gay national anthem,” and said that wife Melania Trump “hates” his dancing.
“She hates when I dance to what’s sometimes referred to as the gay national anthem, you know,” he said. “She hates it.”
Over the years, Trump has gone viral for his fist-pumping dance moves, which do not resemble the typical alphabetical gestures that usually go with the “Y.M.C.A.”
“We love that song,” he continued. “But she goes, ‘Darling, please.’ You know, she’s a very elegant woman. She goes, ‘Darling, please, don’t dance. It’s not presidential.’”
In response to Melania‘s criticism, Trump told her, “I said, ‘It may not be presidential, but I’m leading by 20 points in the polls.’”
He went on to brag that his bid for president impacted the song’s chart performance decades after it was first released.
“You know, that song was No. 5 32 years ago, and it went to No. 1 32 years later,” Trump claimed. “There’s never been anything like it. It never hit No. 1. It was No. 5 32 years ago, and it went to No. 1 for months during the last months of the campaign.”
However, Trump‘s chart numbers and dates aren’t correct. While the “Y.M.C.A.” did experience renewed popularity as he used the song throughout his 2024 presidential campaign, but his numbers and dates are wrong.
“Y.M.C.A.” was released in October 1978 — 48 years ago, not 32 — and peaked at No. 2 — not No. 5 — on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in February 1979. When the song found its new popularity in 2024, it did hit No. 1, but on the Billboard Dance Digital Song Sales chart, not the Billboard Hot 100.
If you didn’t see, Trump shared the shocking reason why he won’t wear a bulletproof vest.
