The song was originally released in December 1980 as part of their album Super Trouper, and originally had a limited single release. It has since grown to get a second life as an unofficial New Year’s Eve anthem with its bittersweet tone and message about looking ahead.

Here’s the lyrics to the chorus: “Happy New Year, Happy New Year / May we all have a vision now and then / Of a world where every neighbor is a friend / Happy New Year, Happy New Year / May we all have our hopes, our will to try / If we don’t, we might as well lay down and die / You and I.

The song reportedly had a very interesting working title (“Daddy, Don’t Get Drunk on Christmas Day”), and even has an accompanying Spanish language version, “Felicidad,” which became a hit in parts of South America upon its release.

The English version was also re-released in 1999, and again in 2008, charting across Europe. More than four decades later, it’s become a seasonal staple.
