There’s a chance that Emma Thompson could have been the First Lady of the United States of America.
While attending a Q&A at the 2025 Locarno Film Festival, the 66-year-old actress looked back at President Donald Trump “stalking” her back in the ’90s following her divorce from Kenneth Branagh.
During the event, Emma reflected on filming the 1998 movie Primary Colors and while sitting in her trailer one day, her phone rang.

“And then he said, ‘I’d love you to come and stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner,’” she continued, while imitating Trump‘s voice. “I said, well, that’s very sweet. Thank you so much. I’ll get back to you.”
Initially, Emma said that she was confused about why the 79-year-old President called her or how he found the number to her trailer phone, but she quickly connected the dots.
“I realized that on that day, my divorce decree had come through,” Emma said. “And I bet he’s got people looking for suitable people he could take out on his arm. You know, a nice divorcee, that’s what he was looking for. And he found the number in my trailer. I mean, that’s stalking.”
Emma was married to Kenneth, 64, from 1989 until their split in 1995. Around that same time, Trump had separated from second wife Marla Maples.
“I could have gone on a date with Donald Trump, and then I would have a story to tell,” the Love Actually star added. “I could have changed the course of American history.”
